Overheard on the train between Ely and Brandon that the signal box at Brandon is to come down next year when the area is resignalled. Two Network Rail guys also saying they are thinking of taking the interior out and keeping it for a museum. Developers are in place to build houses right up to the railway line as all the land is ready to go and a new developer is keen to get on. Crossing will be controlled from Cambridge.

Dont know if they were qualified to say it or just wishful thinking....

Look out for looooong delays on the road then !

It`s true approx 70 houses are scheduled for the  land beside the track on fengate drove. And the signals are to be electronically controled from Cambridge.Peter RidgEwell reported the signaling news a year ago at a town council meeting.as he said if they fail how long would the crossing be shut if help has to come from as far awy as Cambridge?

If it fails the barriers wont be down to long....there are contractors out and about in strategic places to jump on these issues.
The barriers are down now for long periods when the signal man in the cabin decides there is too little time to raise and lower them between trains. Fair enough. However, they will not be manually controlled, they will be done automatuically with a trigger on the track, meaning whilst human judgement will say "not enough time", the wonders of modern equipment will calculate if there is.
I'm sorry to say that the only thing that slows down a train service is human involvement!
Automation may lead to barriers down for shorter periods.
As for the houses, with a ready supply of forces personel wanting to live off base, we find ourselves in an area lacking in high quality rental property - hence the developer wants to make a kiling fast! But he signal box land is not in the parcel they have and i suggest never will be.

I suspect that F.O.B.S might be interested in the signal box. Does anyone know if they are aware of all this?

after seeing the crossing on the thetford - watton rd which is not manned, but on the same line, whip up and down in a short space of time. automation might be the best thing to happen.

For those seriously interested, John Eccles of Network Rail is doing a Presentation at the next Town Council Meeting on Monday 4th July. All welcome to sit in.
All the best,
