Just seen Councillor Lukaniuk's election leaflet. He wants to ban all H.G.V. s from entering the town. Has he thought this through?
It would mean that Lignacite, P.H., Omar Homes, Arrowpack and the two supermarkets would have to close as they would not be able to move their goods. This would lead to massive unemployment and bring misery to hundreds of households in Brandon.
Don't think that I can vote for this as it would be sheer lunacy.

I would vote for him just for that! Brandon is used as a rat run for a lot of the lorries, I'm sure those needing to collect and drop off would be allowed but it would certainly stop all the ones using it instead of going on the A11.  I actually contacted a company who do just that. I asked the question "why do you drive through Brandon rather  than use the A11?" the answer "because we can!" apparently it is a couple of miles shorter.

This would only work if there was a by-pass built.

I live and work in Brandon and I run a fleet of 12 lorries and vans..... if they need to go to Thetford or that way for any reason, guess which way they are heading!  As a company, why should we be expected to run a vehicle that does on average 7 mpg out of our way at our own cost?  Would you run your car that does 40 mpg out to Mildenhall to go to Thetford (or anywhere else you can get to from going through town).

With the price of diesel as high as it is, the matter of a few miles could be the difference in getting the job or not for some companies.

Also, as others have noted elsewhere, on other websites and forums, if you dont want lorries or large vehicles in towns and cities, stop buying things......

I don't think anyone has a problem with our local buisinesses or indeed deliveries / loading etc. More so with the drivers using it as a rat run to get elsewhere, the favoured route to Kings Lynn for example, now seems to be Brandon and onto Weeting rather than A11 to Mundford.
The large vehicles which go down Rattlers road is just wrong, they cannot even keep in between the kerbs. Where there carec no kerbs as in on the way to Elveden, big ruts have been dug down the sides of the road which are potentially killers to cars and mortorcycles
For through traffic, at Mundford, traffic for Newmarket is directed towards the A11, from Fiveways, Swaffham traffic is directed to the A11. a slightly longer journey maybe but less reason to be stopped at traffic lights or railway crossings and potentially saving fuel?

Yes I agree the price of diesel is too high,  I pay full price for mine (no tax allowance's here) and my vehicle's optimum mpg is reached when driving at 56 mph,  but I cannot do that as I am stuck behind lorries doing 50.

the internet is a wonderful thing, with maps and route finders etc. so i tried the 2 routes online.

Mundford to 5 ways via A11      20 mins 18.1 miles
                                  vis 1065   25 mins 13.9 miles

going the long way 3 roundabouts in between and national speed restrictions

coming through 5 sets of lights, 2 pelican crossings, the level crossing closed for around 12 mins every hour, all of Brandon at 30mph and 3 40mph restrictions.

Im sure there is a traffic specialist somewhere that can input the data and tell us the most cost effective way, all those gear changes and the associated wear and tear, the increase in fuel with a constant stop start route and the gain in working time, ok, only 5 mins on this short stretch, im struggling to see the savings in cost of coming through.

Fine if youre based here and delivering here, but firms like.... Jack Richards, Waitrose and Sainsburys are all going on past Mundford towards Swaffham.

Heres a suggestion, is there someone out there that could write a really articulate letter, highlighting the differences ive mentioned, add to that the old flint buildings in the town being damaged by vibrations and of course the health implication of the residents. Im sure worded right and if the figures stacked up we could persuade them to go round.

Given the OP's forum name it's a bit ironic that they have not researched and posted their own answer? And as Cabby has pointed out the economics of the supposedly shorter route surely cannot add up?

Have you ever ask local councillors why most of them don't trailpixie? I have; some say they resist even looking at this site because of the spiteful comments they might read!
