Oscar-winner Winslet was also recognised for her leading role in the series, playing a divorced single mother-of-two who opens a restaurant to survive in the Great Depression.

Winslet looked genuinely shocked as she gave a short acceptance speech.

"I didn't think we were going to win anything," she told the A-list crowd.

Pearce, meanwhile, joked the real perk of his role was not winning an Emmy, but getting to be intimate with Winslet everyday.

"It was delightful working on Mildred Pierce. I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many, many times. Thank you for allowing me to insert myself into your world of Mildred," the 43-year-old said, adressing Winslet in the audience, as he accepted his Emmy.Comedy categories Photo: Two years running ... the cast and crew of Modern Family accept the outstanding comedy series Emmy. Mockumentary Modern Family was the night's big winner, named best comedy series and sweeping the first four award categories - best supporting actor in a comedy series (Ty Burrell); best supporting actress (Julie Bowen); best director (Michael Spiller) and best writing (Steve Levitan and Jeffrey Richman).

"Oh my God! Are you kidding me? I don't know what I am going to talk about in therapy now," first-time winner Bowen said as she accepted her award.

The show's clean sweep of the comedy categories was broken when Jim Parsons was named best actor for the second year running for his work in The Big Bang Theory.

"I am really flabbergasted. I am more shocked this year," he told reporters backstage.

Parsons' win meant a fifth Emmy defeat for departing star of The Office Steve Carell.

Melissa McCarthy of Mike & Molly fame, meanwhile, was the surprise winner for lead actress in a comedy series. Photo: Melissa McCarthy accepts the best comedy actress Emmy ... beauty pageant-style. (Getty Images: Kevin Winter)

"Holy smokes," McCarthy exclaimed as a beauty pageant-style crown was placed on her head.

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart was the other big comedy winner of the night, taking the outstanding variety, music Or comedy series Emmy for an astonishing ninth year in a row. Surprise winnersBest drama - the other top prize at the Emmys - went to Mad Men for the fourth consecutive year.

The stylish 1960s advertising serial faced stiff competition this year from Boardwalk Empire, Friday Night Lights, Dexter, Game Of Thrones and The Good Wife.

As expected, Julianna Margulies was named best actress in a drama series for The Good Wife, but in an upset, Friday Night Lights leading man Kyle Chandler beat Michael C Hall (Dexter), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Timothy Olyphant (Justified) and Hugh Laurie (House) for the best dramatic actor trophy.

Margo Martindale was an emotional first-time Emmy winner for her supporting role in Justified.

"Sometimes, things just take time. But with time comes great appreciation," she said.

Another Emmy rookie, Peter Dinklage, was named best supporting actor for his turn as the clever but rude Tyrion Lannister in HBO's popular medieval fantasy series Game Of Thrones.

It was also a big night for British period drama Downton Abbey.

The show won the best miniseries Emmy, star Maggie Smith was named best supporting actress, while writer Julian Fellowes and director Brian Percival were also recognised in their respective categories.
